The Witcher 3 Gwent beginner guide
Play for card advantage, pass when the opponent overcommits, and treat spies, medics and controlled weather as a system rather than individual high-value cards.
01 / Prerequisites
Prepare before leaving
- ✓Reach the first Gwent tutorial.
- ✓Keep a Northern Realms deck ready.
- ✓Buy affordable cards from every new merchant or innkeeper.
02 / Route
Follow the path in order
- 01
Learn the three-round structure
You only need two round wins. A strong first round is useful, but preserving cards for the next two can be more important.
- 02
Build card advantage
Spies add cards to your hand. Play them early enough to use the extra choices without giving the opponent an easy pass.
- 03
Pass deliberately
When the opponent has committed more strength than the round is worth, pass and make them spend another card to win.
- 04
Use medics and weather together
Medics can recover key units, while weather reduces entire rows. Sequence them after the opponent commits enough units to the affected row.
- 05
Protect the collection
Play every new opponent and buy cards before story routes close. Unique cards from one-time matches cannot always be recovered later.
03 / Common mistakes
Avoid the expensive reset
Do not use every hero card in round one unless the match genuinely ends there.
A higher-strength deck is not automatically better if it lacks spies, medics or reliable row control.
Ignoring Gwent until the end of the story can make a complete collection much harder.
